Electroretinograms from noncorneal electrodes.

چکیده
A. lthough it has long been known that retinal action currents are present, the electroretinogram (ERG) has not become the subject of detailed investigation in the human until recent years. Before Riggs demonstrated that the response might be easily recorded from an electrode supported by a contact lens, no satisfactory method for continuous recording from the human was available. This technique has greatly facilitated research, but use of a contact lens electrode limits the maximum length of experimental session possible and may, in some cases, restrict the properties of the visual task to be observed and measured. In addition, not all individuals find the lens to be comfortable, and this may also increase recording difficulty. Motokawa and Mita reported that the ERG could be recorded from a pair of noncorneal electrodes, one attached to the bridge of the nose and the other attached to the temple near the eye being investigated. This method has not been widely used since the small signals it provides are usually well masked by bioelectric artifacts. The present report shows that ERG's

Electroretinography with noncorneal and corneal electrodes.
The noncorneal ERG is essential for certain patients in which corneal recording is contraindicated. A preliminary report is presented investigating ERGs from three noncorneal montages and their correlation with the corneal ERG. Statistical analysis showed that an electrode at the medial canthus combined with medial viewing gave the closest correlation to the corneal ERG. Repeatability was good ...
متن کاملImportance of the noncorneal absorption route in topical ophthalmic drug delivery.
Transcorneal permeation has traditionally been the mechanism by which topically applied ophthalmic drugs are believed to gain access to the internal ocular structures. Relatively little attention has been given to alternate routes by which drugs may enter the eye. A system has been developed which allowed the investigation in vivo of the contribution of noncorneal absorption to intraocular drug...

متن کاملEffect of repeat use and coating defects of gold foil electrodes on electroretinogram recording
Qualitative defects and resistances in 94 used gold foil electrodes were examined. The electrodes were divided into four groups of varying resistances and gold coating defects. Ten were randomly selected from each group to measure standard photopic electroretinograms (ERGs) in a normal subject. Ten new electrodes were used as controls. There was no significant difference among the electrode gro...
متن کاملThe time course of the electroretinogram of compound eyes in insects and its dependence on special recording conditions.
Electroretinograms recorded from slowly moving insects like the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor and the stick insect Carausius morosus are shown to be distorted by the use of electrodes of stainless steel and silver/silver chloride wires, unless they are used in conjunction with amplifiers having extremely high input resistance. Undistorted electroretinograms can also be recorded using micropi...
